Majority of women would change their looks with surgery

Survey results indicate that more than half the women polled recently would use cosmetic surgery to change or enhance their appearance.

The study included some troubling information about young women and body image in Britain. For example, almost 50 percent of the women reported they had purposely missed a meal to lose weight, and 8 percent admitted to making themselves sick. The research was conducted by BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat and 1Extra’s TXU.

The unfortunate information comes as no surprise to a spokeswoman for Beating Eating Disorders, who reports that women in the study’s age group, and younger women, call the organization frequently.

The spokeswoman encourages people to learn to see themselves in a different light to improve their self esteem and body image. They need to learn positive methods to deal with life’s challenges, she said. Approximately 1.1 million people in the UK suffer from eating disorders.

The survey also found that 60 percent of women who wear size 14 believe they are too heavy and more than 10 percent say they hate the way they look. The survey included women between the ages of 17 and 34.

Breast enlargement and liposuction appealed most to women who reported that they might have cosmetic surgery.
