Some experts are suggesting a link between a higher risk for breast cancer and a woman’s decision to terminate a pregnancy prior to the birth of her first child.
As a group, women who have had an abortion before giving birth to their first child will show a higher level of breast cancer, predicts a study published in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons.
If true, England and Wales could see over 64,000 examples by 2025, an increase from 39,229 in 2004.
The evidence is mixed. Some research confirms the link while other studies show it does not exist, leading Geraldine Smith, Labour MP to ask for further research.
Ms. Smith is concerned about the potential for negative physical consequences related to abortion and questions the attitude of the British public toward the procedure.
This needs to be investigated properly," she told the Daily Mail.
Some women choose to terminate a pregnancy as a form of birth control, without giving much thought to the psychological and physical consequences, according to Ms. Smith.
