Cosmetic surgery a possibility for many women

A large percentage of women said they might consider cosmetic surgery or liposuction or both, according to research at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

Nearly 50 percent of the women polled said they would be interested in cosmetic procedures and an attitional 23 percent said they might be interested.

The survey further revealed that nearly one-quarter of the men surveyed were open to the idea of cosmetic surgery, while 17 percent said it was not out of the question.

The study indicates that people are feeling more pressure to look good, says David Frederick, a graduate student in the Psychology department at UCLA and the study’s lead author.

The research team had not expected to encounter such broad interest in cosmetic surgery.

We know there is tremendous pressure for women to be thin and have a certain appearance and for men to be fit and muscular, but I would not have guessed that so many people would be interested in surgical body alteration.

One surprising finding in the study: people who were satisfied with their bodies were open to the concept of having cosmetic surgery, suggesting there may not be a link between self-image and interest in cosmetic procedures.
