One of the most delicate procedures of plastic and cosmetic surgery, eye-lid surgery is designed to revitalise and rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes and thereby enhance the overall attractiveness of the face.
The main aims of the procedure are to eliminate any appearance of sagginess under the eyes, including what are generally referred to as bags, and reduce puffiness, which may have come as a result of ageing or may be simply an hereditary feature. Eye lid surgery can also be performed in order to correct the appearance of hooded or exceptionally droopy eyelids, which can dim the natural brightness of the eyes and give the impression of extreme tiredness.
Surgery can be performed on the lower lid or the upper lid, or even on both. Incisions will be made along the natural creases of the lids or under the eyes, in order to minimise any risk of slight scarring. Excess tissue and fat that causes the puffiness, is then carefully removed through the area of the incision entry, to leave the eyes looking rejuvenated and much brighter. Often there is no need to remove any of the original skin around the eyes.
Dependent on the delicacy of the operation, typical eye-lid surgery can last between one and three hours and is performed under anaesthesia.
Any swelling or bruising should reduce in the first week or so. Eye lubrication is usually recommended to keep the eyes clean and free of infection. Complete recovery may take up to a month or so.
