Tummy Tuck

The aim of the plastic surgery technique referred to as a tummy tuck, is the removal of excessive fat and skin build up in the area of the waist, in order to flatten out the shape of the lower body and rejuvenate the appearance of the abdomen.

The plastic surgery procedure commences with the surgeon making an incision from the hipbone, above the pubic area, to the corresponding hip bone. The navel is then freed from abdominal tissue by a second small incision, and the skin separated from the outer abdomen wall, exposing the muscle tissue.

The cosmetic procedure continues with the tightening of abdominal muscles by pulling and stitching them together. The excess layer of skin, together with the fat is then drawn down to the area of the initial incision, and the excess fat is simultaneously removed. The open area is then closed and sutured, and the navel repositioned through a new opening made by incision before being stitched into place.

There is usually some swelling of the abdomen in the first few days following surgery, but suitable medication will mitigate the pain. The surgeon may suggest that the knees should be raised and supported in order to reduce the extra stress on the muscles of the abdomen.

Walking may be a little difficult in the first few days, but support garments will assist mobility.

The recovery time for each individual varies, but usually a full return to normal activity can be expected within six weeks.
